| What
is Sueño?
The
first question I am usually asked after someone views my graffiti is,
"What is Sueño?
What does
it mean?" The simplest and most direct answer
I can offer is that Sueño
is the Spanish word for Dream. However
this answer simply does not suffice. Sueño
is more than
just a word or a signature that I use when I write graffiti. Sueño
is an idea,
a way of life even, it is an approach
to viewing the world around you with unrelenting
optimism. When I
was growing
up, I was told over and over again to be reasonable, to think more
rationally, and to know my limitations. In many instances I feel
society forces us to conform, our every idiosyncrasy is looked down
upon. Creativity and freethinking are veiwed as unfavorable and
valueless qualities
that need to be kept in check and monitored closely. Don't be an
artist, a dancer, a musician: the money's not there! Be
something useful like a businessman or a lawyer. Life is about so much
more than making money; life is about doing what you love and finding
real happiness.
For the longest time I did not pursue
any type of
career in art. It was always just a hobby or a side job, too risky to
really dive into. But Sueño
is about just that, letting go of
your concerns and your worries and diving in, head first. Sueño
is not being afraid to dream, to take chances, and to really
enjoy what you are doing. If you have a passion or a love, than that is
exactly what you should be doing and you shouldn't let anyone tell you
otherwise. The world needs Dreamers, historically they are the
individuals who have had the most profound impact and created real
change and progress.
So what is Sueño?
Sueño
is that
something
that you have always had deep inside you and have been too
scared
to
ever let it surface. In it's most pure form, Sueño
is your own Dream and
aspirations, whatever those may be. I love making artwork,
and I hope that you enjoy
the pieces that I make, but most of all I hope that I inspire each and
everyone of you to follow your own Sueño.
